Field, Jason --- "ILB Honoured with Human Rights Award" [2000] IndigLawB 71; (2000) 5(4) Indigenous Law Bulletin 4

ILB Honoured with Human Rights Award

by Jason Field

On International Human Rights Day, 10 December 2000, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission presented the Indigenous Law Bulletin with a human rights award in the print media category for a special issue on ‘Indigenous Women and Law’.

Professor Garth Nettheim received the award on behalf of the ILB from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Dr Bill Jonas. Dr Jonas remarked the award could symbolise the ILB’s contribution to the observance of indigenous peoples’ human rights by providing informed discussion and debate on indigenous legal issues.

The ILB dedicates this award to all of the people and organisations that have contributed to the production of the ILB since 1981. It is your work that has enabled the ILB to emerge as a globally unique and respected legal journal. We would also like to thank ATSIC and the UNSW Faculty of Law for their ongoing financial and administrative support.

As proud as we are to have received this award we remain humbled by the fact that there is a long way to go in the fight for Indigenous social justice. We are also humbled by the knowledge that there are a great number of people who have taken up the challenge of working to advance the exercise and enjoyment of human rights for a broad spectrum of humanity. In receiving this honour, the ILB recognises your efforts and hopes that you continue to ‘fight the good fight’.

We are continually looking for opportunities that can expand our readership and accessibility to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and invite indigenous artists, indigenous and non-indigenous writers to contact the editors with information, ideas, folios and articles for exhibition, promotion and publication in the ILB.
